Children Who Kill

Thirteen-years-old Peter Barton (not his real name) was playing with a little girl of 6. Claiming that he was pretending to be a professional wrestler, peter punched, kicked and stamped the playmate to death. Her liver was severely damaged; her skull was fractured and the medical experts compared the injuries to a fall from the top of the house. Peter was tried in court as an adult and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole when he is 38.
“What we are dealing with is a new kind of childhood criminal. They are starting younger and they know what they are doing. They won’t think twice about killing” said the Florida State District Adam Emmit. The state of California alone registered 312 homicides committed by minors which must of them were gun-related.
Discussion questions for your comment:
Peter claimed he was pretending to be a wrestler. Could he be saying the truth?
Is it really possible that a 13 year-old boy could intentionally kill a young girl?
Are children the same as they have always been, or are they really different these days?
What do you think about the punishment was given to Peter?

  1. believe that Peter is telling the truth a thirteen year old boy could not have a mind to kill a child, was a game I think was that the child was unable to measure their strength and unfortunately the child murderer and what I'm concerned I asked where their parents at the time as parents are responsible for these creatures, also shows what every child here at home. Peter tax punishment seems too severe a child of only thirteen years, did not think of what this living peter in knowing who killed a girl, knowing she could do something for that not to happen, to know that for a game will lose his life in prison. What I think is that parents should be kept more aware of what they do and what your children play in the streets in the same house to avoid the problem happened with peter

  2. I think that he was not telling the truth, although he was pretending to be a wrestler was not for it to commit a crime, that is not a reason to do something like that. It is possible that a thirteen year old boy does that, the situation is now very complicated and in these days happen offences such as these, now the killers may be young boys, already now it is not as before, where everything was quiet and not things like that happening. Children are not the same as always, before everything was more beautiful now, we see that children before were quieter, but now, now not have no respect for anything and are capable of anything, for example what they can see in this example, though in these times, there are children that are quiet and not others. It seems a perfect punishment, now you have to be the case, any person who commits a crime is you should be punished with imprisonment, no matter that age is that person, and that what we need are the values and must comply with laws and also follow the ways of God move away from the bad things that harm us and live in peace with everyone, so that this world in which we live is a real success and be reason to move forward, we must reflect on this and get to think about what we do and do well is what we are doing. We must not be carried away by something, we must think things twice or more times before committing anything wrong, so we leave not harmed and us can live in peace and harmony forever.
It is very important to just read this news help us to realize that life is very difficult and know that the most important thing is human life. God left us in this world that we love all know value the life, no one has the right to remove us life, God and that is why we should follow this example, it is also good that we are able to appreciate what God we gave God let a perfect world, but the humans destroy with wars, murders... Yet it is not late to change the world and to be aware of the things that happen, which must change. We also know that all are equal before God, should lead us well at all times, must move away from the things that are not of God and follow it to him, our life will be perfect.

I think that parents should also be aware of what their children want to do and what they do. In addition to teach values to their children and tell them what is right and what not. It is important that children learn from small so that they are not to be a person without values. Also that children learn from the things of God and that they will not do the opposite of what God let this world.
This is something to be thought and that forward when we have children, teach them what is good and what not. Also teach them values and the importance of the values in the life of a human being. :D

  3. I think the kid had no reason to start punching and kicking his friend, I think the kid must be punished because he makes a homicide, at the age of thirteen years you should know what a homicide is, and he should know that kids with the age of the girl he killed are very small and delicate, and they can`t defend himself against a boy of thirteen.
I think that this boy should be punished like a grown up man because I don`t think that he don`t know that he should not do that.
Also, when he said he was pretending to be a wrestler he should know that the wrestlers are not murderers.
Now children when they see wrestling programs, they also claim to be fighters, something that was different because before few children could have a TV and see those programs.

  4. I think he wasn´t telling the truth because he was old enough to difference between the bad and the good things and definitely he knew what he was doing and if he really want to be a professional wrestler he could hit a doll or something like that.
He could intentionally kill the girl but that´s something without sense, what could a girl of 6 years do to him? There´s no reason to kill a little girl!
Well Is hard for me to know how where the children before but by now I´m sure that from when I was a child to these days everything has change, little boys and girls at their 10 years already have cellphones ad they play violent video games a lot. So yes children are different these days.
The punishment that was given to Peter, to me, seems fair enough because he has to be punished has an adult person that kills someone. Maybe he wasn´t thinking in that moment but he kill a little girl so he has to pay for his acts.
    :)

  5. I don´t think that he is saying the truth because the only thing that could justify it is a mental problem. I guess in this age he knows what is good and what is wrong.
I think Peter made it aware of his actions because a person who is 13 years old is a teenager and has enough intelligence to play in this way with a girl younger than him and without considering the consequences.
Well, nowadays mass media transmit a lot of anti-values and one of the most common is violence, also today it is presented in homes so children can learn about it. I agree about the punishment, but also I think it is too hard to be a teenager. There are centers of support for violent people, where they can handle cases like Peter’s. We shouldn´t judge people for the rest of their lives for something that they did in the past, and I think they can learn about their mistakes and overcome a situation.

  6. I think Peter is lying because a boy who is 13 years old is mature enough to realize the things he´s doing are wrong and there are consequences for his actions.
Although, these situations are very rare, I think is possible because unfortunately at this time children learn a lot of anti-values that influence their mind negatively. Also can influence the examples they can see in their family and friends.
I think children have changed a lot because before they were calmer, focused and with better family values. These days due to television, radio and internet children have learned a series of bad attitudes.
I agree with his punishment because he should learn that bad actions have consequences, however, I guess they are exceeding a little bit about the time cause he´s going to lose most of his life in jail. I think they should help him with psychologists and see if he improves his attitude.

  7. I think that the children’s always play something’s the games that are not the correct one but they did not know, is like a crazy think that a children what to cause something like the died to an other children that probably is him or her friend. In this way I think that a 13 year-old boy could do not intentionally kill other young girl... because that something really stupid, why someone kill a friend in a game and then he obviously have to paying for this.
A kid younger as “peter” was feeling sad when some friend die, so… by he wants to kill a friend? He Feeling really bad because he has a friend die? Is like a crazy, I thing that "petter" said the truth. Obviously the kid’s change, like all the things change with the time, the problem is that some kids change in the bad way, we can not generalize because like the parents say nobody is like other
The punishment is enough because “Peter” was tried in a court as an adult, but how this persons know that “Peter” really wanted to kill this girl, how they know that this is not a terrible mistake?, maybe the correct was a less strong punishment

  8. Peter maybe was telling the truth, about he was pretending to be a wrestler, but it really doesn’t matter that he was playing like that because he killed a person and that is a crime. Nowadays the T.V and the society teach us violence any time, so, in my opinion, he didn’t kill her intentionally, but he is sick and he was following the examples that he watches everywhere. I think the children in the present are influenced by stereotypes, in difference of few years ago, when things were more peaceful and lighter than today. I think it is ok meanwhile he receives the proper treatment to be inserted in society again.

  10. I think Peter told the truth and he was only playing, but it is very difficult to know what had really happened because when the girl was being kicked she most express pain and he had no intention of stopping. I believe that the child cannot be judge without knowing what really happened or at least investigate his past and his behavior.
Nowadays children live in an environment where there is much violence and even the media shows images or programs not suitable for them and the access to weapons is much easier than before, that’s why very young children learn bad behaviors.
About the punishment that was imposed to Peter I think is the right thing because it may seem cruel but the law should apply equally to all and a crime such as murder should be punished.

  11. I think that's scary because a boy of twelve years old kill a little girl and the damage is very unreal, and he... he can't go to the jail(he is a minor),that unless he turns 18 years old.
He's Dommed to carry with the blame forever. And other topic the kid practicing with a little girl especially Wrestling merged with a kick boxing!!!.
And he is spotted and now he have criminal antecedent, HE IS A ASSASIN!!!.And probably he kill a second time is very Dangerous,And the sistem legal of United States of America is very serious and he's life is ruined only for play to the wrestling.
This murder is a alert that we are teaching children because is become more violents and the parents is must important be taught to the kids
what is good and what is wrong, for the future of the kids.

  12. I think that Peter isn’t a killer, he was just playing like all the kids do, but maybe he doesn’t realize that she was getting hurt, I think that he is saying the true because he never did something like this before, also he is not a little boy and he most know what is good and bad and maybe he would be punished as an aggressor but never as a killer in the United States of America is a real crime to kick or push someone because that is aggression, I think that movies and T.V shows influence the young audience because it has a lot of violence and maybe he saw a movie about a wrestler and he tried to copy that character so maybe is not his fault, the punish is too hard for a Thirteen-years-old kid he is too young and he will be in a jail all his life and maybe he didn’t realize what he was doing, he is not a real criminal and a lot of criminals weren’t punish that hard.

  13. I think Peter is telling the truth, because it may be that at that time just thinking about playing or pretending to be a fighter and did not think of the consequences that might happen or occur. And he showed off the court, it is very difficult to lie. So I think that is unable to intentionally kill the child of six years after that is just a boy of thirteen, could not have the mind of a murderer. So I thought that time children have a healthier mind that today, as they grow surrounded by violence and it seems unfair punishment given to him, because criminals to commit murder, the law so hard with these people, but the child may only made an accident and sentenced to life imprisonment, I think it is very unfair.

  14. I think the child might be telling the truth and that at the age of thirteen a child has a lot of innocence with respect to other persons other than the claims that everything he was doing as a game and at that time could see the consequences of their actions and evil that was causing her friend but we can not say that already at this age, many teenagers and children have an idea of what is good and what is bad, and personally I think the real culprits are the media because they interfere in the lives of young people showing violence and removing the values that parents try to instill, which is why educating young people in a good way is increasingly a difficult task. I also believe that the laws were very unjust to give such a harsh sentence to young because if we see different ways the poor child will never get out of jail and will lose the best years of his life.

In my opinion about Peter, he could be saying the truth but in the moment that he was playing whit his friend he could be thinking about bad thinks to do whit her or he may be thinks that the think he was doing weren’t bad and is going not to happen anything. But actually the lesions were too dangerous and serious. And a 13 years old child may kill intentionally a person or in this case a young girl, but sometimes it could be a disease that him needs to kill to can feel better. In my opinion I think children’s are different. That’s why the environment or the people that they live everyday are bad people whit the same reasons to kill people and by the news they see a lot of died people and violence. And finally in my opinion the punishment that he received was good because he had no to do that but on the other hand he is just a kid and what they should did whit him was to help him to recovered and maybe take him whit a psychologist.

  17. Maybe a 13 year old boy does not have a mind as developed to be homicidal. However there are children at a very early age that education is an inappropriate and violent.
I believe that to be 13 years, it might be true that he was pretending to be a wrestler. Because at that age a person imitates the acts on TV watching etc.
My opinion is that children are always the same, I mean there are always children educated, violent, scholars.
The punishment seems a little drastic as it was an act without conscience, but also Peter learned the lesson that should not risk playing games and going to affect other people, as in this case the 6 year old girl

Ok. The boy Peter Barton seems to have this new criminal attitude, but as he claims, he said he wanted to be a wrestler. I think if he wants to be a wrestler he has to be correctly oriented in order to perform it, and don't assume him as a young-assassin directly.
Now, about the attack to the girl, I guess he did it intentionally because the article describes it very clearly, but is a strange case as we know normally 13-year kids are not like that, generally. Lately, this criminal type has been a common factor in some young guys, so we can say it is raising up and we need to stop it before it's too late. How? Well I would like to say that an appropriate way of doing this, is to induct them in a rehab center facility exclusive for this boys, and release them in a future time when they are sure they are better persons, and have no criminal presence inside of them anymore.
About Peter's punishment, I think violence doesn't heals violence, so I prefer to state that's unfair because young kids are innocent and barely have judgment on what they do because they are not the grown-up enough.

  20. Why he do that until the little girl was dead, when he see that the girl was desperately seeking to stop why he didn’t stop? Just the fact that he were hurting a girl is a crime. maybe that was the thing that tell us he wasn’t doing that just for play that he was a wrestler. If he has the strength to do it so he could do it, he should not hurt her, but if he was hitting her so hard to kill her he could kill more children. Now the kids are more aggressive, but based in their ages they said “I didn’t knew what I was doing” when they perfectly know that they are hurting someone. Jail for so many years might not help him if is just the jail, if he has a psychologist that talk with him about his actions and that he would not do this things in the future may be enough

  21. I don´t think that he is saying the truth because I think he has a mental problem to do this. I think that he with 13 years old differences between that is good and that is wrong
I think peter has to take care of his actions because he’s so young and is a teenager who has enough intelligence to play in this case, in this way with a younger girl than him. He has to thinks the consequences of his acts. Nowadays children and teenager are influenced for the media and it transmit anti-values but father and mother are the principal responsible of the acts of the child. I think this punishment is so good because that people have to learn the lection and change their life in the better way.

  22. I think Peter at 13 years of age should know the consequences that brings a game so maybe it did not intend but killing is a serious crime against life is perhaps in your family had an example like this and thought it was just a children's game but did not think about the consequences. kids today are not the same as there are many media and entertainment that affect the lives of children such as TV and video games I think it was a bit unfair the punishment that was given to Peter as he was just a boy of 13 years perhaps a less strong as punishment is life imprisonment they too must have thought he was a teenager and an adult because there are many versions that can be proved that he did or did not intend

  24. I think that children of that age lots of times play in a very aggressive way. So he might thought he was just playing. But times have changed and maybe now some kids do know what they are doing and they keep doing it to damage other people. This kind of conduct is due to the violence that is present in the electronic games or television, also the domestical violence that is a fact in our society nowadays. The judgment that he had was very strong, because he be telling the truth when he said he was just playing. However I support the idea of punishing these people since they are young or they can keep doing this kind of aggression and it will be each time more dangerous.

I do not think a child of that age have the idea of killing a person rather he did as a joke or a game and never thought about what would happen after the end of this "struggle. " These children vary greatly with the period q are before they did as a game because you could not see much crime but now they do it to cause harm to another person and if they are aware of what they are doing. Di punishment is not bad but the truth was a child and q did not know what he was doing that punishment should be giving them to people who do know q are doing and they do no harm as he did as a normal game for any child.

  28. for me peter was telling the truth, he just wanted to play he is just a boy of thirteen years but we can not really know what he really was thinking at the time the abuse to the child so that I get to kill her. children today are not like before the infuence of the media such as television programs in which you can find the violence the punished was very good because these children can have serious problems and reach to kill many people maybe not because they want maybe they can have mental problems for many reasons like family genes and should be punished with a sentence from a young adult for committing the same crimes but We also believe that all people make mistakes and we can change and have a second chance

  29. I think not, because when one is thirteen years is well aware of the acts being carried out and is quite sure that you are doing and we know that the trick is very dangerous, I think her did not want to kill himself he thought that the blows, kicks were not strong enough to cause death the little girl of six years and if adults are often wrong with their actions can make a child easier make that bad actions.
Today, times have changed and how to be children before it was preserved and calmer, but now everybody is very different, children have a very open mind this is a product of globalization. Pedro's sentence was very strong because even though it already know is good and bad is still a child, I say let him free and not punished, but I do not remember long after leaving prison can and being with family.

  30. I think peter didnt say the truth because it was a normal kid and didnt have any mental problem and for that the court had been released, also i think that thirteen years old is enough to kill and do bad things and peter had knowledge of what he done, I think everything is linked to what children see on television , internet etc if children are guided and controlled by what they see will not fall into these problems of violence which often ends badly, I think it was a good punishment because caused great damage and suffering to families thirteen years is enough to know what is done.

  31. I think he´s so grown up to know the big consequences of his acts. The struggles are very dangerous, and when you are 13 years –old you are mature, maybe not like an adult, but you can differentiate that obvious things. The innocent girl didn´t know what he wanted to do with her…. In my personal opinion that´s not true because he could be in seventh of our school…
Now….he could be crazy, the madness doesn´t choose the age to attack…. I think he didn´t kill her intentionally…. It´s relative….. you can´t judge the guy until you know his real mental state…. But I think that he knew what he did………………
It´s really hard to give an opinion about that… I think the evil have always existed, so the children in the past could be murderers like today, but now is worst because the TV and internet can influence.
Finally, the punishment is totally just if the medical studies were done….

  32. In my personal opinion a kid who is Thirteen years old has the capacity to think about what he is doing so. For me he has a criminal mind because other child with that age will think about what he is doing and never will trade a woman on that way. For me it’s really possible because a kid with that age has the enough strong to kill her, the children’s nowadays are really different because they are not the ones who think in princess, Santa Claus or fairy tales, the kids of these days think totally different because they don’t worry about to be kids, they now just think into have girlfriend, boyfriend or in to fight if there is a problem, I think that the punishment is too much hard and I’m not agree with that because in this cases we didn’t have to forgive that we are trading with a child that can be change and the best way to do it is not with a hard punishment.

  33. I think that he doesn’t saying the truth because he is a teenager that supposed that he knows what he is doing and obviously he kill the girl and in a way very dramatic so I think that this doesn’t was a fight.
For me is possible that a 13 year old boy kill a girl because maybe her parents was killers people or something like that, or maybe this kid watch bad tv programs since he was really little and he learn about this programs and do the things that make in that programs.
In this days children are really different….years before in the newspapers, news and radio was so strange to listen about a child kill other person…this is very sad because nowadays this become normal because now we can listen in the news that teenagers and young people kills.
I don’t agree about the punishment because is better to teach this kid about the good things, and the sentence in the jail wouldn’t help to “Peter Barton” to be a better person

  36. I argue that a child of thirteen years and sufientes is aware of his actions and knows what it does, it is impossible for this not realizing that he is doing harm to the child who is attacking, and if you laws should be punished but with more favorable to the minors and they do not have a degree of knowledge of the action that is committing as large as an adult ... children currently receive a very strong visual pollution that leads them to commit many sometimes violent acts without realizing the impact that this can bring ... I think the punishment that is imposed is not commensurate with the vision that has the lowest at that age, the prisons do not have a healthy environment for the development of the child also that he would be deprived of an educational training, but if he should be punished because it harms the healthy development of a family.
